Mississippi barbour Pitches His Crime Fighting Plans

Barbour Pitches His Crime Fighting Plans to Mississippi Officer Abe Long pulled 35 pounds of marijuana out of a garbage bag. In an adjacent file cabinet, the Hancock County Narcotics Division stored dozens of other confiscated drugs.
So far this year, investigators have worked 130 drug cases.

Matt Karl heads up the narcotics division. "I can't sit here and say we're going to clean drugs up in Hancock County completely," Karl said. "That's impossible. It's impossible. But we're going to curb it."

A few miles away, republican gubernatorial candidate Haley Barbour told the Mississippi Deputy Sheriff's Association the state must do more financially to fight drugs. "When 80%, or nearly 80% of crime in our state is drug related," Barbour said, "and we cut the drug enforcement budget by 41%, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that we're going to have real problems. And we're having real problems."

Barbour's crime fighting platform included more drug enforcement funding, swifter prosecution, and better use of regional and private jails. "I propose we manage the prison system better," said Barbour. "It's time to stop playing politics with public safety."

It was the republican's drug talk that intrigued the Hancock County Narcotics Division.

The candidate said,"There is a drug epidemic in Mississippi and it's the main cause of the crime wave we're experiencing."

Officer Karl said his agency is taking a bite out of that epidemic. "I think we're going to put a curb to it. We're going to slow it down."

Karl admitted the drug fight would be easier, if his narcotics division had money to buy additional equipment that could help prosecute illegal drug users.

Late Thursday, Gov. Musgrove's camp responded to Barbour's drug enforcement funding criticism. A spokesman for the governor said Barbour's crime fighting program simply spends more taxpayers money on convicted felons.

As for Barbour's plan for Mississippi to use regional and private prisons, the Musgrove spokesman said the governor opposed somebody profitting off crime.

Barbour faces Mitch Tyner in the August fifth primary. He told WLOX News he's in favor of increased wages for law enforcement, and more help for the state of Mississippi crime lab.
