Two face charges in Mississippi meth bust

BAYOU CUMBEST, Mississippi -- Two men face drug charges after they were caught Monday afternoon allegedly operating a methamphetamine lab at an island campsite in the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Mississippi county authorities said.

Louis Miller, commander of the Narcotics Task Force of Jackson County, said Darryl Keith Dennis, 40, of 7259 Beasley Road, Lucedale, Miss., and Kenneth James Johnson, 39, of 7609 Martin Bluff Road, Gautier, are each charged with manufacturing methamphetamine in connection with the case.

Johnson, he said, was released on $7,500 bond. Dennis was out on bond for another charge, and County Judge Larry Wilson revoked the previous bond, meaning Dennis will remain in adult detention center until the earlier case is resolved.

Miller said narcotics agents re-ceived a call from a citizen about suspicious activity going on in the reserve.

The campsite, he said, was located on an island in a marshy area about 112 miles from Point O' Pines, a private boat launch on Grand Bature Road in the Bayou Cumbest, Mississippi area.

"The only way you could get to it was by boat," he said. "We were able to get a boat from the Department of Marine Resources and some officers and went out to the island. We were able to sneak up on them and surprise them. They had a clandestine lab for the manufacturing of crystal methamphetamine."

At the campsite, Mississippi authorities al-legedly found a glass jar with methamphetamine in the cooking stage, a container of anhydrous ammonia, a rifle and a machete. The men were removed from the island to Point O' Pines, where they were taken into custody. Five DMR Marine Patrol officers assisted in the arrest.

A hazardous materials crew from Spanish Fort, Ala., was called to remove the lab and clean up the site.

"I want to thank the citizen who contacted us and the DMR officers for their assistance in this case," Miller said.
