More Kids Being Exposed to Meth Labs in MississippiOn January 2, Brandon, v police found four children -- ranging in age from four months to 10 years -- inside their home, where methanphatimine was being produced. Drugs were only feet away from a baby's cradle.
Mark and Terry Waycaster face charges involving the drugs and endangering the four children.
The Director of the Jackson Division of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Jim Ruble, says it's even worse on children.
"It makes you mad," he says. "It really does. It affects internal organs, your breathing, your thinking. It's very dangerous."
It's a problem Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and the Mississippi Department of Human Services say is all too common.
Over the last 18 months, at least 15 children in the metro Jackson area have been found in homes where meth was being produced. A recently passed law orders anyone convicted of running a meth lab with children in it to face a substantially longer jail sentence than one without children.
Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and Mississippi Department of Human Services have been awarded a $250,000 federal grant to help children affected by meth labs. The grant will be used to buy 20 phones for each agency, which will help communication. A van may soon be purchased for children to immediately be able to bathe, eat, and change clothes.
"They actually have to decontaminate those children if they are found in an actual lab," says Billy Mangold, director of the Mississippi Department of Human Services Division of Family and Children's Services.
Those children are immediately taken into custody.
"If we believe a child is in danger based on the information we received, we ask for a court order to place that child in a safe place," Mangold says.
Mississippi officials agree that for many of these children, any place is better then the ones from which they were removed.
In the past, some parents charged with running meth labs have gotten their kids back. Mangold says heightened awareness of the problem will probably stop that. He reminds everyone to be observant in their community. He says meth labs with children can pop up anywhere. Drug Rehab by County
